The Putnam County Fair is one of those summer traditions that locals look forward to all year long. From the rides and live entertainment to the food and friendly faces, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. If you’re planning a visit this year, we’ve rounded up a few local tips to help you make the most of fair week.
Check the Forecast (Seriously)
If there’s one thing locals know, it’s that the weather can change in a hurry. One minute it’s bright and sunny, and the next you’re looking for a place to wait out a passing summer shower. Before heading to the fair, take a quick look at the forecast and plan accordingly. Sunscreen is a must on those hot afternoons, but it’s never a bad idea to keep a rain jacket or umbrella on you just in case.
Save the Ferris Wheel for Sunset
If you take one piece of local advice, let it be this. Sure, the Ferris wheel is fun any time of day, but there’s just something about riding it at sunset. As the lights come on and the sky starts to change colors, you’ll get one of the best views of the fairgrounds.
Arrive Early for Your Favorite Events
Some of the fair’s biggest attractions draw large crowds, so arriving a little early can make all the difference. Whether you’re planning to catch a concert, motocross, or the demolition derby, giving yourself extra time means you’ll have a better chance of finding a great spot. For concerts especially, many locals like to bring a blanket and settle in on the hillside before the show begins. It’s one of our favorite places to enjoy the music while taking in the atmosphere of the fair.
Get Huskeys Ice Cream
We could try to convince you with a long explanation, but honestly…just get the ice cream. It’s a Putnam County Fair tradition.
Don’t Wear Your Nice Shoes
Trust us on this one. Between the gravel, grass, and all the walking, your favorite white sneakers probably won’t stay white for long. Wear something comfortable that you don’t mind getting a little dirty.
Come Hungry!
Half the fun of the Putnam County Fair is trying all the delicious food. From funnel cakes and fries to fresh-squeezed lemonade, there are plenty of fair favorites to enjoy. Around here, we’re especially big fans of deep-fried Oreos, they’re one treat we look forward to every year!
If you’re looking for something a little more filling than traditional fair food, be sure to stop by the 4-H Food Booth near the exhibit buildings. It’s a local favorite for a homemade meal and a great way to support the Putnam County 4-H program while you’re at the fair.
Don’t Be Afraid to Join In
The fair isn’t just about watching, it’s about joining in. Whether it’s bingo, karaoke, contests, or another activity happening that day, don’t be afraid to participate. Some of the best fair memories come from saying “why not?”
Slow Down and Enjoy It
The Putnam County Fair only comes around once a year, and somehow it always goes by way too fast. Take your time, grab another lemonade, cheer on the livestock shows, ride a few extra rides, and soak it all in. Better yet, bring your friends and family along. After all, the best part of fair week isn’t just the rides or the food, it’s making memories with the people you’re with.
