If you are seeking adventure, you might be completely surprised at what Putnam County has to offer. Located directly between Charleston and Huntington, outdoor enthusiasts can cover a lot of ground across our county in just a few hours! A true ‘go at your own pace’ destination, Putnam County has over 30 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and trail running! The Mary Ingles walking trail, Esther and Norman nature trail, thrill-seeking trails at Eleanor Park…those are just the beginning of your outdoor adventure. The newly developed Meeks Mountain Trail system in Hurricane has challenging courses for the most avid mountain biker all the way to beginner trails for those just growing their love for the sport of mountain biking. On any given weekend it is not uncommon to stumble upon a trail race so be sure to reference our race page for the latest racing events. If you’re into disc golf, Putnam County is home to two nationally ranked courses! The course at Valley Park was designed by a nationally ranked disc golfer, while the course at Eleanor Park has proven to be a crowd favorite. Once you’ve wrapped up your adventures on the trails, you’ll be delighted to know the Kanawha River runs right through Putnam County and provides so many opportunities for water access and recreation including stand up paddle boarding with Appalachian Boarding Company. They’re hosting sessions daily! If you’re up for a little competition, a friendly game of paintball is the way to go…head over to Scott Depot for the Scary Creek Paintball experience. Wrap up the day with axe throwing at Jaxe and Jills in Hurricane!
