Summary

Paddling along the Kanawha River in Winfield, WV offers beautiful views, a relaxing pace, and exercise throughout the warmer months in Putnam County, West Virginia.

One of the most memorable moments from our weekend in Putnam County didn’t happen on a hiking trail or at a scenic overlook. It was on the Kanawha River, where we traded hiking boots for paddleboards and spent a couple of hours gliding across the calm water that felt more like a serene lake than a winding river.

While many visitors come to the area for hiking and sports activities, Winfield offers another great way to experience the outdoors. Options include a relaxing afternoon paddle, a completely guided experience with local experts, or a lively community event.  The Kanawha River has plenty of opportunities to get out on the water.

Here’s a look at three ways to experience one of Putnam County’s scenic natural resources.

Join a Guided Paddle with Mountaineer Paddle Company

For our visit, we spent the afternoon on the Kanawha River with Mountaineer Paddle Company, and it ended up being one of the highlights of the weekend.

Although storm clouds lingered for much of the afternoon, we caught a break in the weather just in time to launch. The dramatic skies created a beautiful backdrop, and once we were on the water, the river was incredibly peaceful. We only saw one other boat!

Carter and his family took time to make sure we felt comfortable on our boards before heading out. They bring all the basic gear you need, along with helpful instruction for newer paddlers, but allow experienced paddlers to simply enjoy the scenery and their company.

If you get the chance to try their paddleboard sugar cookies, absolutely take it.  They’re fantastic and a family recipe!

If you’ve never tried stand-up paddleboarding before, this is an excellent place to start. If you’re already comfortable on a board or in a kayak, but don’t have your own equipment, this is a beautiful and peaceful stretch of river to explore.

Bring Your Own Paddleboard or Kayak

If you already have your own equipment, Winfield is an easy place to enjoy a day on the water at your own pace, with convenient parking and river access at the Winfield Boat Ramp.

The calm sections of the Kanawha River are well suited for stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes.

Pack a picnic, or make it part of a weekend getaway. After a morning hike at Meeks Mountain Trails or a round of disc golf at Valley Park, an afternoon paddle is the perfect way to experience another side of Putnam County.

Early mornings and evenings often offer the calmest conditions, and sunset can be an especially beautiful time to be on the water as the light reflects across the river behind the Ross Booth Memorial Bridge.

Just remember that while this is a calm section of the river, it is still a river.  There is a slight current, which you will have to paddle against as you return towards the bridge and boat launch.

Experience Winfield Watersports Weekend

If you’ve always wanted to try kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding but weren’t sure where to start, Winfield Watersports Weekend is the perfect opportunity.

Held annually in June on the Kanawha River, this community event introduces visitors to a variety of paddlesports in a fun, welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re stepping onto a paddleboard for the first time or climbing into a kayak for your first float, you’ll have the chance to learn the basics and maybe even discover a new favorite outdoor activity.

It’s also a great event for families, groups of friends, and anyone looking to spend a day outside enjoying the river.

Tips for Planning Your Paddle

A little planning can help you make the most of your time on the river.

  • Check the weather before heading out, especially if afternoon storms are in the forecast. Flexibility is always best!
  • Wear clothing that can get wet and shoes that stay secure around the water.
  • Bring sunscreen, water, and a dry bag for your phone and car keys.
  • If you’re new to paddleboarding, a guided outing is a great way to build confidence.
  • Consider planning your paddle for the evening when temperatures are cooler, and the river is especially scenic.

Enjoy Putnam County from the Water

Whether you’re joining a guided paddle with Mountaineer Paddle Company, launching your own kayak for a peaceful afternoon, or visiting during the busy Winfield Watersports Weekend, spending time on the Kanawha River is an experience you won’t want to miss.

For me, it became one of the most memorable parts of our weekend in Putnam County. It offered a chance to slow down and enjoy the green rolling hills with great company.

If you’re planning a visit to Putnam County, be sure to leave a little time in your itinerary to get out on the Kanawha River. You may find, like I did, that it’s one of the best ways to experience everything Winfield has to offer.
